The hostel is set by the sea and has wonderful views across to Flodigarry Island, Gairloch and the Torridon mountains on the mainland. Flodigarry was once the home of the Jacobite heroine Flora MacDonald, and the area is famous for the distinctive cliffs and rock formations of the Quiraing which towers above the hostel. Portree Independent Hostel is ideally located in the centre of Portree, the picturesque capital of the Isle of Skye. Once the main post office for the island, the Victorian building has been converted into a hostel with bags of character whilst being well provided with excellent facilities. The spacious kitchen and dining room, housed in the original sorting room, is the perfect place to meet friends and other backpackers whilst enjoying the fabulous view across Portree Bay to the Cuillins from the window. The reception and lounge is the original post office counter area, still with the original safe, clock, service counter and poste restante pigeonholes, and nowadays has a TV and comfy sofas. The hostel sleeps 60 in rooms with up to four beds, whilst there are larger dormitories sleeping 6, 10 and 12. One dorm is suitable for disabled guests with an en-suite wheelchair-friendly bathroom.
